We're in the midst of our annual assault by juvenile ghosts, goblins and witches (and even one kid dressed as a tax collector!) and worry both that we'll run out of candy and also that we will have too much left (and thus be tempted to eat it).
Halloween has never been a favorite holiday of mine, since I've failed to look into the medieval origins and the cathartic, nervous jokes about death and dying that seem to be at the center of it. Seems like there's plenty of talk and evidence of such things without a holiday to focus on it.
On the other hand, as they say on editorial pages, dressing up can be fun and it's a chance to have neighbors visit and see how much kids have grown.
At a party last night, I showed zero originality by putting on much of my Red Sox paraphernalia and being a Sox fan. Yawn. My favorite costume was a worn by a blind friend who came as "blind justice." Best conversation starter was a woman who came in medieval garb and got talking about her reenactment activities.
Wish I had also thought of a clever-low-cost costume a friend came up with that featured several pictures of chickens taped onto his shirt and a magnet worn around his neck - a chick magnet, of course.
Off to Boston tomorrow in preparation for Monday "mapping'' to get ready for the cyberknife procedure the following week.
