Swine Flu Blues

Swine flu derailed our plans to visit Ithaca this weekend to celebrate Janice's 32nd birthday. Apparently there are over 800 cases reported in Ithaca, mainly at Cornell where Janice is a graduate student.

She had fixed up her house and was eager to show it off to all of us, especially Auntie Judi. But the oncologist said, essentially, that it would be a dumb risk for me to take, and nobody else was excited about going to the epicenter of the swine flu outbreak in the Northeast.

But it's almost better for us all to be gathered in Delmar. We went to the RPI football game, which was held in their brand-new stadium, which would make any SUNY Albany football fan green with envy. We did this instead of attending the Cornell-Bucknell game, figuring what the hell, one Big Red is just like another Big Red. We were rewarded by seeing an exciting RPI win over Utica 17-14. That of course again raises the question: how come Utica never gets a break?

Judi and I expect the highlight of the weekend to be Janice opening the multitude of crappy things we bought her at the Dollar Tree store yesterday. It was my first visit to such an establishment, and I was stunned at all the junk that apparently sells. I was shocked to learn that we had spent $18.96 and come out with absolutely nothing of value.
