Forget what I have said before about health-insurance companies. We got word today that Empire Blue Cross-Blue Shield will pay for the cyberknife treatments I had this week. We don't have an exact amount on the cost, but it runs into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Initially the company said no, claiming that the procedure is experimental, but we went ahead with the treatment anyway. We gathered strong opinions from docs that we sent to the insurance company, pointing out that the treatment is now widely accepted, and that it is one of the few viable options for someone in my situation. The company rep was extremely helpful in directing us through the appeals process.
Such rationality, apparently, paid off, as the company took a serious second look at its decision and reversed its position.
The decision might even get me to stop complaining, even if only briefly, about the soaring cost of health insurance.
